The Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) in Brazil is positioned to assume a global role in the establishment of strategies that address threats to tropical biodiversity. These threats are climate change (e.g. sea levels rise, the frequency and intensity of droughts and fires), social (e.g. overpopulation, increasing poverty and urban areas) and biological (e.g. hunting, invasive species, habitat loss).
Thus, BioGATe presents a proposal based on cutting-edge and global education and research to construct the leaders engaged on critical thinking, with the following pillars:
(1) the formation of an international research network with mechanisms for continued collaboration between students and, professors from UNESP and renowned international universities, represented by scientists leading strategic themes in Biodiversity;
(2) research at the frontier of knowledge, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary, covering from fundamental knowledge of biology, ecology and conservation to omics (genomics, transcriptomics, etc.) and modern approaches to bring comprehension about the processes related to evolution, interaction and diversification of populations, species and higher taxa.
